What to Do When You Run Out of Things to Say to Her

You almost never run out of things to say. You run out of questions. The conversation itself is full of material, if you know where to look.

The short answer

Go back into the conversation instead of searching for a new topic. Pick something she said earlier and react to it or ask for the story behind it; share something from your own day; switch the format with a quick game or a hypothetical; or, if the conversation has peaked, end it on a high note and pick it up tomorrow. Running out of things to say usually means you’ve been relying on questions. Reactions, stories and callbacks never run out.

Why your mind goes blank

The blank moment usually arrives for one of three reasons:

  • You’ve been interviewing. If every message is a question, you eventually run out of questions. See texting like an interviewer.
  • You’re overthinking the next message, trying to make it perfect, which makes nothing feel good enough. See how to stop overthinking texts.
  • The conversation has naturally peaked. Every conversation has a high point; texting past it feels like effort.

Five ways to find something to say

  1. Scroll up. Find something she said earlier with feeling in it (a complaint, an excitement, a weird detail) and come back to it. “Wait, back up, what happened with your roommate and the plant?”
  2. React instead of asking. Take her last message and have an opinion about it.
  3. Share something real. One thing from your day, a thought you had, something you saw. You don’t need a topic; you need a detail.
  4. Change the format. A quick game, a “would you rather”, a photo of something funny, a voice note.
  5. End on a high note. If the conversation is good but winding down, close it warmly. Tomorrow’s conversation will start easier. See how to end a text conversation well.

Searching for a topic versus mining the conversation

WeakThe topic hunt
Her: yeah it was a long day
You: ah I see

He has nothing to add, so he says nothing. The silence that follows feels heavy.

You: so do you have any pets?
Her: no
You: oh ok

Reaching for an unrelated new topic after a stall feels random and makes the conversation feel even more like work.

BetterGoing back in
Her: yeah it was a long day
You: Long day as in the coworker who microwaves fish strikes again?

A callback to something she mentioned two days ago. No new topic needed.

Her: 😂 NO. worse. he brought a whole tuna salad and ate it AT his desk
You: That man is running a psychological operation. What’s the office’s counterattack
Her: someone put a passive aggressive sign on the fridge

The material was already there. A callback turned a dead moment into a running joke she enjoys.

Messages for the blank moment

InvestmentA callback
You: Wait, I never got the end of the story about your roommate and the plant

Why it works: Callbacks show you listened and reopen a thread she already cares about, which is easier than starting fresh.

Emotional movementA detail from your day
You: Today I watched a man argue with a parking meter for five minutes. He lost

Why it works: A small, specific scene gives her something to react to without you needing a topic.

CuriosityA hypothetical
You: Random question: if you had to eat one cuisine for the rest of your life, what are you picking

Why it works: A light hypothetical changes the format, is fun to answer, and reveals her taste.

Emotional movementHonest and light
You: I’ve completely lost my train of thought. Tell me something good that happened today and I’ll pretend I planned this

Why it works: Owning the blank moment with humor is relaxed and charming, and hands her an easy way in.

ProgressionEnd it well
You: I’m going to leave this conversation on a high note while I still seem interesting. Talk tomorrow?

Why it works: Ending first, playfully, beats letting it fade, and it sets up tomorrow.

What not to do

  • Random new topics with no connection to anything (“do you have pets?”).
  • “So…” or “what else is new?” They hand the problem to her.
  • Panicking into a question spree. It turns a pause into an interview.
  • Apologising for being boring. It makes her reassure you.
  • Forcing it. Some conversations are done for the night, and that’s fine.

Keep a small material bank

The men who never seem to run out of things to say aren’t more creative. They notice more. Over a few days of texting, keep a mental (or literal) note of three kinds of material:

  • Loose ends: stories she started and never finished, plans she mentioned (“I’m trying a pottery class”), a decision she was stuck on.
  • Her opinions: anything she feels strongly about, from pineapple on pizza to her least favorite coworker. Strong opinions are always worth returning to.
  • Your own small scenes: something odd you saw, a minor disaster, a thing that made you laugh. One a day is plenty.

When the blank moment arrives, you’re not inventing. You’re choosing from what’s already there.

Material, not topics

The principle: Curiosity

Conversations run on material: reactions, stories, callbacks, opinions. Topics are just containers. When you feel you have nothing to say, it usually means you’ve been looking for new containers instead of filling the ones you have. Going back into what she said creates emotional movement and curiosity, and shows attention. After the moment passes

  • The conversation restarts: keep using callbacks and reactions; they’re your best material.
  • It’s still flat: end it warmly and start fresh another day.
  • It happens every time you talk: check whether you’re interviewing, and whether it’s time to meet.
  • She keeps giving you nothing to work with: see she never asks questions.

Questions

What do I do when I run out of things to say over text?

Look back at the conversation for something to react to or ask more about, share a detail from your day, change the format with a game, or end it on a high note. You rarely need a new topic.

Is it okay to let the conversation die?

Ending it on purpose, warmly, is better than letting it fizzle. And a pause isn’t death; you can pick it up tomorrow with a callback.

How do I stop running out of things to say?

Ask fewer questions and react more. Notice details in what she says and save them for callbacks. And remember that your own small stories are material.
