How to Respond When Your Ex Texts You: Decide What You Want First, Then One Honest Message

A text from an ex is a question about what you want, disguised as a question about what she wants. How to answer it honestly in one message, why the reply should take an hour, and the message that is always wrong.

Updated 5 min read
The short answer

When your ex texts you, decide what you want before you reply, because the reply is really an answer to that. If you are done: one kind, closed message.

“Good to hear from you; I hope you’re well. I’m in a different place now and I’d rather leave things where they are.” If you are open but careful: warm, brief, and let her say why she texted.

If you want her back: honest and clear, without a speech, and off text.

Take an hour before you reply to any of them; the instant reply is the one the old feelings write, and the old feelings are why you broke up.

Why she texted

  • Nostalgia, late at night. A song, a place, a photo. The most common, and the least meaningful.
  • Loneliness. The thing she left for ended, or never started. Zombieing has that pattern.
  • A practical reason. Your jumper, her book, a mutual friend’s wedding. Answer the practical thing.
  • Guilt, or a loose end. She wants to say something she did not say. Let her.
  • Genuine reconsideration. Rare, and it comes with an acknowledgement, not just a “hey”.
  • Checking you are still there. A text to see whether the door is open. Your reply decides whether it is.

What to send, by what you want

  • You are done: closed and kind. One message, no reopening, no “but how are you?”
  • You are open but wary: warm and brief, with the question handed back. Let her explain the text before you decide anything.
  • You want her back: honest, clear, and off text. The conversation that matters is not this one.
  • It is practical: answer the practical thing and nothing else, warmly.
  • You don’t know what you want: wait a day. “Saw this, want to reply properly, will do tomorrow” is allowed. Then decide.
  • The text is late at night: reply in the morning, whatever you want. Nothing good is decided at 1am by text.

The instant reply versus the decided one

WeakReplying from the old feelings
Her: (11:48pm) hey stranger. was just thinking about you
You: (11:49pm) Hey!! I think about you all the time honestly. How are you? I miss you
Her: aw. I’m ok. just a weird night
You: Do you want to talk? I can call
Her: maybe another time x

He replied in one minute with everything, she replied with a mood, and “maybe another time” is where he now lives. The old feelings wrote the message and got the old result.

He answered a late-night “hey” with his whole heart and got an “x”.

BetterAn hour, a decision, one message
Her: (11:48pm) hey stranger. was just thinking about you

He does not reply that night. In the morning, he decides he is open but not willing to be a weird-night text.

You: (9:10am) Morning. That was a surprise. I’m glad you’re thinking of me, and I’ll be honest, I’d want to know what prompted it before I know what to say back. What’s going on?
Her: fair. I’ve been thinking about how it ended and I don’t think I was fair to you. I wanted to say that
You: Thank you for saying it; that matters. If you want to talk properly, I’d do that, in person, not over text. If this was just something you needed to say, I’ve heard it, and I’m okay

A night’s wait, a decision, a warm reply that handed the question back, and then a clear offer with a clear alternative. Whatever happens next, it is not the old pattern.

Messages for each decision

Emotional movementYou are done
You: Good to hear from you, and I hope you’re well. I’m in a different place now and I’d rather leave things where they are. Take care, genuinely

Why it works: Kind, closed, and complete: it answers the text without opening a door you want shut.

CuriosityYou are open, carefully
You: This is a surprise. I’m glad to hear from you, and I’d want to know what prompted it before I say much. What’s going on?

Why it works: Warm but brief, and it makes her say why she texted before you invest anything.

InvestmentYou want her back
You: I’m glad you texted; I’ve thought about you too. I don’t want to do this over text, though. Can we talk properly this week?

Why it works: Honest and clear without a speech, and it moves the conversation that matters off the screen.

ProgressionIt is practical
You: Hey. Yes, I’ve still got your book; I can drop it with Sam on Saturday. Hope you’re doing well

Why it works: Answering the practical thing warmly and completely, with nothing added, is the reply when there is nothing else to say.

What not to send

  • The instant reply. The one the old feelings write.
  • “I miss you” in the first message. Even if true. It hands her everything before she has said why she texted.
  • The essay about the breakup. Not over text, not in the first reply, possibly not at all.
  • Anger. “Why are you texting me now?” is a question with a hurt in it, and it reopens the thing.
  • Pretending you are fine when you are not. Honest and brief beats cheerful and false.
  • Replying at 1am. Morning. Everything is clearer in the morning.

Decide first; the reply is the decision

The principle: Progression

A text from an ex is a test of momentum in the direction you have already chosen, and the only good reply is one that comes from that choice rather than from the feelings the text stirred.

An hour, a decision, one honest message. Should you text your ex? is the same decision from the other side, and texting after months of silence covers the version where you are the one restarting.

After you reply

  • You closed it, kindly: nothing more. If she pushes, one repeat, then silence.
  • You are open and she gave a reason: the honest checklist applies to you too before you meet.
  • You want her back and she agreed to talk: in person, and listen more than you explain.
  • It was a zombie text with nothing behind it: Zombieing has what the silence after your reply means.

Questions

What should I say when my ex texts me?

Decide what you want first, then one honest message: closed and kind if you are done, warm and brief with the question handed back if you are open, clear and off text if you want her back. Take an hour before you send any of them.

Should I reply to my ex at all?

If you can reply from a decision rather than a feeling, yes, once. If the text is practical, answer the practical thing. If you cannot reply without reopening something you meant to close, a kind closed message or silence are both fine.

My ex texted me late at night. What does it mean?

Usually nostalgia or loneliness, not a decision. Reply in the morning, if at all, when both of you are in daylight.

How do I know if my ex wants to get back together?

She says so, with an acknowledgement of what went wrong, not with “hey stranger”. If her reason for texting is a mood, it is a mood. If it is a conversation she wants to have properly, she will say that when you hand the question back.
