How to Start a Text Conversation With a Girl

A good opener does one job: make the first reply easy and the second reply tempting.

Updated 4 min read
The short answer

Start with something specific to her or to the two of you: a callback to where you met or what you talked about, a playful question that’s easy to answer, or something you saw that made you think of her. Keep it to one or two lines and make the first reply effortless. Then, when she answers, react to what she said before asking anything new. Good openers aren’t clever lines; they’re specific, light and easy to respond to.

How to write an opener

  1. Find a hook. Something you know about her or share with her: how you met, a detail from her profile, an inside joke from the night you met, something she mentioned she was doing.
  2. Make it easy to answer. A light question, a playful choice, or a statement she can react to. Not a big, open question.
  3. Add a bit of you. An opinion, a joke, a small confession. It shows personality and gives her something to engage with.
  4. Keep it short. One or two lines. A long opener feels like a lot.
  5. Send it at a normal time. Daytime or early evening. Late at night reads differently.

Choose your opener by situation

A dead-end opener versus a good one

WeakThe generic opener
You: Hey how are you?
Her: good thanks! you?
You: I’m good too

Two polite exchanges and nowhere to go. The opener gave neither of them material.

Her: nice

“How are you?” gets “good, you?” almost every time. The conversation is stuck before it started, and now he needs to find a topic from scratch.

BetterA specific opener
You: Hey, it’s Sam from the party. I need to know if you ever convinced your friend that pineapple belongs on pizza

Context, a callback to their conversation, and a light question.

Her: hahaha no, she’s still wrong. she called me a monster
You: As someone who also puts pineapple on pizza, I feel attacked on your behalf
Her: thank you!! finally someone with taste
You: We should form a support group. Over pizza, obviously

The opener gave her a fun, easy topic she cared about, and the conversation had energy from the first reply.

Openers that work

InvestmentA callback to how you met
You: Hey, it’s Sam from the party. Did your friend ever admit she was wrong about the pineapple pizza debate?

Why it works: A callback reminds her who you are and the fun moment you shared, and gives her an easy, enjoyable first reply.

CuriosityA playful choice
You: Important question before we go any further: morning person or night owl

Why it works: A simple either-or is effortless to answer, and the answer gives you both something to tease or bond over.

Emotional movementSomething that reminded you of her
You: Just saw a guy walking three corgis in matching sweaters and thought you needed to know

Why it works: Sharing a moment that made you think of her is warm and specific, and it’s easy for her to react to.

CuriosityA light guess
You: I’m guessing your weekend involved brunch and at least one dramatic group chat. How close am I

Why it works: A playful guess is more engaging than a plain question; she’ll want to confirm or correct it.

ProgressionDirect, if you’ve met
You: Hey, it’s Sam. I had fun talking to you last night. Want to get a drink this week?

Why it works: If the in-person chemistry was strong, a short, direct invite can be the best opener of all.

What not to do

  • “Hey” or “hey how are you”. They put all the work on her.
  • A big, open question (“so tell me about yourself”). It’s effortful to answer.
  • A long opening message. Save the stories for when the conversation is going.
  • Opening with a compliment about her looks. It can feel generic and puts her on the spot.
  • Copy-pasted pickup lines. They’re rarely as funny over text as they look online.
  • Texting very late at night as a first message.

What to do after her first reply

The opener only starts things. What you send next matters just as much. When she answers, react to what she said first (an opinion, a laugh, a tease), then add something of your own or ask one more thing. Don’t jump to a new topic or fire off another question straight away. Two or three good back-and-forths with reactions and a little humor are enough to build energy. From there, see how to keep a conversation going.

Specific openers create curiosity

The principle: Curiosity

An opener works when it gives her a reason to reply, which is curiosity or a callback, and when it’s easy to answer, which keeps investment balanced. Generic openers ask her to invent the conversation. For the bigger picture of texting from first message to date, see how to text a girl.

Questions

What’s a good way to start a conversation with a girl over text?

With something specific: a callback to how you met, a playful question, or a moment that made you think of her. Keep it short and easy to answer, and avoid a bare “hey”.

What should I say in my first text to a girl?

Remind her who you are if needed, reference something from your conversation or her profile, and add a light question or comment. One or two lines is plenty.

Is it okay to start with “hey”?

It works sometimes, but it gives her nothing to reply to and makes her do the work. A specific opener is almost always better. See what to say instead of “hey”.
