How to DM a Girl You Don’t Know: One Specific Reason, One Line, Easy to Ignore

A cold DM is a stranger tapping a shoulder. The ones that get answered have a specific reason, no compliment on her looks, and no pressure in them. What to send, what to expect, and when to stop.

The short answer

DM a girl you don’t know by giving her one specific reason the message is for her and nobody else, in one line, with no compliment on her looks and no question she has to work for.

“Your post about the bookshop in Lisbon: I’m there next month, is it the one near the castle or the one by the river?” lands in her requests with a reason to open it.

“Hey, how are you?” and “you’re gorgeous” do not. Make it easy to ignore, and expect most cold DMs to go unanswered whatever you send.

One message, no follow-up unless she replies, and if a comment or a shared friend can come first, use that.

Is there a reason, and is there a better route

  • You share something real (a post, a place, a hobby): that is the reason. Lead with it.
  • You only like her photos: there is no reason. A DM will read as one, and it will be right.
  • You have a mutual friend: mention them in the first line, or get introduced.
  • She has public posts you can comment on: comment first, twice over a few weeks, then DM.
  • She is a creator with thousands of followers: your DM is one of hundreds. Make it short and useful, and expect silence.

The compliment versus the reason

WeakThe cold compliment
You: Hey, I don’t usually do this but you’re absolutely stunning

It arrived in her requests folder next to thirty others saying the same thing. There is nothing in it that is about her, and nothing for her to answer.

You: [three days later] Guess not haha

The first message had no reason and the second confirmed it was about him.

BetterOne specific reason
You: Your post about the bookshop in Lisbon: I’m there next month and there are two with that name. Is yours the one near the castle or the one by the river?
Her: the castle one! the river one is fine but the castle one has the cat
You: A bookshop cat settles it. Did you find it on purpose or get lost on the way to something else?
Her: got lost, obviously. best way to find anything in Lisbon
You: Agreed. Right, I owe you a report when I’m back. Any other things I should get lost on the way to?

A question only she could answer, from something she chose to post, and a reason to message again.

Cold DMs that get opened

CuriosityThe post question
You: Your reel of the climbing wall: which gym is that? I’ve been looking for one where the routes change more than twice a year

Why it works: A practical question about something she posted gives her a reason to answer that has nothing to do with being hit on.

InvestmentThe shared thing
You: We’ve both been to the same tiny jazz bar in Copenhagen according to your post from May. Did you get the table by the piano or did the regulars have it?

Why it works: One real shared detail makes a stranger feel like a near-acquaintance, which is the most a cold DM can hope for.

Emotional movementThe mutual friend
You: I think we were both at Sam’s thing in June and never actually spoke, which seems like an admin error. Hi. Was the cake as bad as he claims?

Why it works: A mutual friend turns a cold DM into a late introduction, and a shared joke makes it easy to answer.

CuriosityThe light, honest one
You: Honest version: I liked your post about the wild swimming spot and I have no excuse beyond wanting to know if it’s as cold as it looks. Is it?

Why it works: Admitting there is no clever reason, with a real question attached, is disarming and still gives her something to answer.

What gets a cold DM deleted

  • Compliments on her looks. They are the whole requests folder.
  • “Hey” or “how are you”. No reason to open, no way to answer.
  • A paragraph. Effort from a stranger reads as pressure.
  • Following up on silence. One message. Her silence is the reply.
  • Messaging after a story view. Watching her story and DMing straight after reads as tracking.

What a cold DM is up against

Her requests folder is mostly compliments, spam and men who watched a story and typed “hey”.

A message with a real, specific reason stands out just by existing, and it gets answered when she has a minute and the reason is one she can engage with in a line.

Even then most go unanswered, because she does not know you and owes you nothing. That is not a verdict. Message requests covers how the folder works and why so much never gets read.

Better routes than a cold DM

If you met her once, say where: DMing a girl you met once is a different and easier message.

If you can comment on her posts first, a couple of real comments over a few weeks make the DM a continuation rather than a stranger.

If a friend can introduce you, that beats everything. DMing a girl on Instagram has the general approach, and left on seen in DMs covers what to do when a cold DM is opened and not answered.

One reason, one line, easy to ignore

The principle: Curiosity

A stranger’s message earns a reply by being about her, short, and free of pressure. That builds curiosity in the only way a cold DM can: she wonders how you noticed. Everything else in the folder is about the sender, and she can tell in four words.

Questions

How do you DM a girl you don’t know without being creepy?

Give one specific reason the message is for her (something she posted, a place you have both been, a mutual friend), keep it to one line, skip anything about her looks, and send it once. Make it easy to ignore.

Should I compliment her in a cold DM?

Not her looks. Those messages fill her requests folder and all read the same. A specific compliment on something she made or wrote is fine as part of a question, not as the whole message.

What if she doesn’t reply to my DM?

Leave it. One message is the limit with a stranger, and her silence is the answer for now. A follow-up turns a polite non-reply into a reason to block.

Is it better to comment on her post first?

Usually, yes. Two or three real comments over a few weeks make your DM a continuation of something rather than a cold message, and she will recognise your name when it arrives.
