Why Your Dating App Matches Don’t Reply (and the Fix for Each Cause)

Matches that never message back are usually not rejecting you. They are skipping a message that asked for too much effort or too little. Which of the five causes is yours, and what to send instead.

The short answer

Matches don’t reply for five reasons, and only one is about you. The message gave her nothing specific to answer (“hey, how’s it going”). The message asked for too much (three questions, a paragraph).

She swiped in a batch and never looked back. Your profile lost the second look she took before replying. Or she simply has twenty other matches.

Fix the first two by sending one line that reacts to one specific thing on her profile and ends in something easy to answer. Fix the fourth with your photos and bio.

The rest is volume: message every match within a day and expect a third to answer.

Which cause is yours

  • You open with “hey” or “how’s your week”: cause one. She has nothing to say back. Go specific.
  • Your openers are long or have several questions: cause two. One line, one hook.
  • You message days after matching: cause three. She forgot the swipe. Message the same day.
  • Good openers, still nothing, across many matches: your profile is losing the second look. Fix the first photo and the bio before you write another word.
  • About a third reply: that is normal. The problem is volume and follow-through, not your messages.

A message that asks her to invent the conversation versus one that hands it to her

WeakNothing to answer
You: Hey! How’s your week going?

Every one of her matches sent this. There is nothing in it that belongs to her or to him.

No reply. Not a rejection; a skip.

You: Guess you’re busy haha

The second message confirms there was never a conversation to join.

BetterOne specific thing, one easy question
You: Your third photo is the exact beach my brother got stung by a jellyfish on. I need to know if you had a better day there than he did
Her: hahaha oh no. I did, no jellyfish, just sunburn
You: Sunburn is the respectable injury. Was that a one-off trip or are you a serial beach person
Her: serial. I need the sea at least twice a year
You: Noted. Which was the best one so far?

The opener gave her a picture of him, a laugh, and a question she could answer in one line.

First messages that get answered

CuriosityReact to a photo with a guess
You: I’m guessing the festival photo was the one night you swore you’d never camp again

Why it works: A playful guess about her photo invites a story and shows you actually looked.

InvestmentPick up a detail from her bio
You: Your bio says you have strong feelings about crisps. I have a ranking and I suspect we disagree

Why it works: Using a bio detail proves effort and gives her a low-stakes argument to join.

CuriosityAsk the question her prompt invites
You: You put “ask me about the time I got lost in Lisbon”. Consider yourself asked

Why it works: Prompts are written to be answered. Taking the invitation is the easiest reply she will get.

Emotional movementA light relatable admission
You: We matched at 11pm which means one of us was in bed scrolling instead of sleeping. I’ll admit it was me

Why it works: A small self-aware line gives her something warm to react to with no effort required.

ProgressionFor a match that has sat for days
You: We matched, then I vanished into a work week. Resurfacing now: how was the hike in your second photo?

Why it works: Owning the delay in half a sentence and moving to a specific question restarts a cold match cleanly.

The five openers that reliably get skipped

  • “Hey” and its cousins. There is nothing in them for her to answer.
  • A compliment on her looks. She has twenty of those waiting, and they all read the same.
  • A paragraph. Effort she has not earned yet feels like pressure.
  • Several questions at once. She skips rather than choose.
  • A copy-paste line. Women compare notes, and it shows.

What a no-reply actually means

Most unanswered first messages are skips, not rejections. She matched in a batch, looked at the messages the next morning, answered the two that were easy and interesting, and left the rest.

Your message is competing with other messages, not with her opinion of you. That is why specific and easy wins: it is the one she can answer in ten seconds while she is half-awake.

First message examples has forty that pass that test.

When the problem is the profile

If your openers are specific and short and still land at under one reply in five, she is looking at your profile a second time before answering and not liking what she sees.

The usual culprits are a first photo that is a group shot or a selfie, a bio that says nothing, and photos that are five years apart.

Fix those before writing more messages, because a good opener from a weak profile still loses. Keeping the conversation going picks up once replies start.

She answers the message that costs her the least and gives her the most

The principle: Curiosity

A reply is a trade. She spends effort and attention; she gets back interest and fun. Your first message sets the price. One specific observation and one easy question keep the price low and the curiosity high.

A paragraph or a “hey” gets the price wrong in opposite directions.

Investment explains why the first message that shows you looked at her profile is worth ten that did not, and active but not replying covers the match who is clearly online and still silent.

Further along, when she keeps replying but won’t give you her number, she usually isn’t sure yet.

Questions

What percentage of matches normally reply?

On most apps, about a third of first messages get a reply when the message is specific and short, and far fewer when it is generic. If you are below one in five, look at the profile before the openers.

Should I message her again if she never replied to my first message?

Once, after a few days, with something new and light rather than a “hello?”. If that gets nothing, unmatch mentally and move on. Two unanswered messages is the limit.

Why do women match and then never message?

Swiping and messaging are different moods. Many women swipe in batches and only message later, if at all. Sending a good message the same day you match catches her while the swipe still means something.

Is it my photos or my messages?

Test it. Send ten specific, one-line openers. If three or more reply, your messages were the problem and now they are fixed. If fewer than two reply, the second look at your profile is where you are losing them.
