Does Being Bald Affect Dating? The Honest Version: One Study, the Surveys With Their Bias Named, the Offsets
The forums say it is over and the clinics say nobody minds, and both are selling something. The one study, the surveys read with their bias named, the control split, and the single decision that moves the reading most.
Being bald affects dating a little at the first glance and barely after it; the evidence is smaller than either side claims. The one peer-reviewed study found shaved heads rated more dominant, stronger and taller than the same men with hair, and also less attractive and older. The industry surveys, run by companies selling hair-loss treatment, found most people saying hair loss had no effect on their love lives and a minority saying it hurt; an app test found a modest match gap. The reading moves most with one decision: a shaved or cropped head reads as chosen; hair grown to cover reads as the loss plus the worry.

The evidence, with its bias named
| The source | What it found | Who paid for it | What to take from it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mannes 2012, three studies, peer-reviewed | Shaved heads rated more dominant, stronger, taller; also less attractive and older than the same men with hair | A business school | The shave trades some attractiveness for dominance and height; it is a trade, not a loss |
| A hair-loss treatment retailer’s survey of men and women | Most said their hair loss had no effect on their love lives; about three in ten said it had hurt; a majority of US women called baldness attractive | A company selling treatment | Directionally useful, and read it as marketing: a clinic benefits from “most people don’t mind, but treat it anyway” |
| A clinic’s dating-app test, two identical profiles with and without hair | The profile with hair got more matches over ten days, by a modest margin | A hair-restoration clinic | The first-glance cost is real and modest; a clinic has every reason to run and publish exactly this test |
| The forums | It is over | Nobody; the loudest voices | Nothing; the forums select for the men for whom it is over, and the selection is the finding |
The study is the only piece of this that was not produced by someone selling a treatment or a worldview, and what it found is a trade rather than a verdict. Shaved reads as more dominant and physically larger, which is not nothing in a first second, and as less attractive and older, which is also not nothing. The surveys and the app test, read with their bias named, add that the first-glance cost is modest and that most people say it does not matter.
That is what you would expect if the first glance is one step of many. The looks page has how much the first step decides, and the answer is: whether there is a second look, and nothing after.
What none of the evidence measures is the thing that moves the reading most in practice, which is whether the baldness was decided. The thinning-hair page has the stages; the short version is that a shaved or cropped head reads as a man who knows how he looks, and hair grown to cover reads as the loss plus the hiding. The study compared full hair with a shave; it did not compare a shave with a comb-over, and that is the comparison most men are actually making.
Two bald men at the same party
A house party. He is fully bald on top and has kept the sides long, combed across, with a cap he has not taken off indoors.
The cap was the first thing she noticed, the question was about the cap, and the answer was about hiding. He is now the man in the hat.
The hair was never going to be the story. The hat made it one.
Same party. He is shaved close, with a short beard, and is standing the way the standing page describes.
Nothing about his head came up, because nothing about his head was asking to. The shave and the beard read as a look, and the look got out of the way.
He is the man with the wine. The study’s “more dominant, a little older” is doing quiet work, and the “less attractive” is one second old and gone.
What makes baldness cost more than it does
- Covering. The comb-over, the cap indoors, fibres, length at the sides to compensate. Each one is read as the loss plus the worry, and the worry is the expensive part.
- Reading the forums. They select for the men for whom it went badly and then take a vote. The vote is the selection.
- Reading the clinic surveys as neutral. They are marketing, and the marketing wants you both reassured and treated.
- Leading with it. The self-deprecating bald joke in the first minute tells her it is on your mind. Once, later, if it comes up, lightly.
- Deciding it is the reason. If dates go badly, the head is almost never why, because the head is the first second and the date is decided after it. The control split sorts what is yours to change.
- The shave without the rest. A shaved head reads as a look when the beard, the posture and the clothes agree with it. The grooming order has the rest of the first second.
- Waiting at the thinning stage. If you are not yet bald, the stages page has the decisions, and the earliest one is a doctor.
It is a trade at the first glance, and the decision is what she reads
The honest answer is that baldness costs a little at the first second and that the cost is a trade: less attractive and older on average, more dominant and larger on average, by the one study that was not selling anything. After the first second, nothing in the evidence says it matters, and most people say it does not.
What moves the reading is whether the head was decided: shaved or cropped and kept, with a beard and posture that agree, reads as a man who knows how he looks, and that is the sentence under the whole of the map’s first step. The control split: the hair is not yours; the decision is.

Questions
Do women find bald men attractive?
Some do, by their own account in the surveys, and the one peer-reviewed study found shaved heads rated less attractive but more dominant, stronger and taller than the same men with hair. It is a trade at the first glance. Most of what women respond to after that glance has nothing to do with hair, and a decided look (shaved, beard, posture) moves the glance in your favour.
Should I shave my head if I am going bald?
When the thinning has reached the point where the shortest cut no longer looks like a cut, yes, and many men prefer it sooner. The shave reads as a decision, and the study’s dominance and height effects come with it. What costs more than either option is the long middle of covering. The stages page has when.
Does being bald hurt you on dating apps?
A little, in the one test a clinic ran: the profile with hair got more matches, by a modest margin. Photos are the pure first glance, so the first-glance cost shows there most. Shaved with a beard, good light and a real smile closes most of the gap; a cap or a photo angled to hide it opens it.
How do I stop worrying about being bald?
Decide, and then stop hiding. Most of the cost men feel is the worry, and the worry shows (the cap, the angle, the joke in the first minute) in ways the baldness itself does not. Shave or crop, choose the beard, fix the posture, and let the first second be one second. The control split has the longer version of what is yours.
