The Third Date and the Question of Where This Is Going: What It Decides, and How to Raise It

By the third date the question has changed from “do I like her?” to “is this going somewhere?”. What the date is for, the plan that gives the question room, the one line that raises it, and the third date rule.

The short answer

The third date decides whether this is going somewhere, and the honest way to run it is to let that question have room without making it a speech.

Plan something longer and less structured than the first two (a daytime date, a walk that ends somewhere), so the conversation can go beyond the material of dates one and two.

Say what you want in one line when the moment is warm: “I like where this is going.” That is intent, not exclusivity.

The “third date rule” is a line from a television show, and the only rule that holds is that both of you want whatever happens.

How to run the third date

Four parts, in order
  1. Plan for time, not for impact.

The third date should be the longest so far and the least scheduled: a Saturday afternoon into evening, a long walk and a late lunch, a market and a film and a drink.

The first two dates were auditions; this one is time together to see what it is like. The second date was depth and a little more initiative; the third is ease.

  2. Let the conversation go past the material.

By date three you have both used the good stories. The third date is where the dull, real things come up: work on a bad day, the family member who is hard, the thing you are worried about this month. Let them.

A third date that stays as polished as the first is a third first date.

  3. Say the one line.

When it is going well and the moment is warm (the walk, the end of the meal, the pause before a goodbye), say what you want in a sentence: “I like this. I’d like to keep seeing you.”

Then let her answer, or not. It is not a question that needs a reply tonight; it is intent said out loud so she is not guessing.

  4. Make the fourth plan before you part. A third date that ends without a next plan is where many things quietly stop. Name the next thing, lightly, with a day.

What the third date is and is not for

  • Saying your intent: yes, in one line, when the moment is warm. She should leave the third date knowing you want a fourth and more.
  • The exclusivity conversation:

not yet, unless she raises it. Three dates is intent; exclusivity is a question for when you have both stopped looking, usually a few dates later. Raising it now is a speech about a decision neither of you has made.

  • Meeting friends: a yes if it happens naturally (a mate at the bar), a no as the plan. The third date is still the two of you.
  • Staying over:

whatever you both want, decided by both of you, and never because of a number. The first small touches and the first kiss are the steps before it, and if those have not happened, this is not the night.

  • Big questions (kids, moving, exes): one honest exchange if it comes up; not an agenda. The third date can hold a real conversation; it cannot hold an interview.
  • Deciding it is not going anywhere:

yes, and the third date is the kindest place to decide it. Three good-but-flat dates is an answer. Say so plainly and gently, and do not book a fourth to be polite.

The third-date mistakes

  • The speech. “I think we should talk about what this is.” One line of intent, not a conversation about the conversation.
  • The exclusivity ask. Too early, and it turns a warm evening into a negotiation.
  • Another polished date. A third dinner in a third nice restaurant keeps you both performing. Go somewhere ordinary for longer.
  • The number. Anything that treats date three as a milestone that something is owed on. It is not, and she will feel it if you think it is.
  • No fourth plan. Leaving the third date with “I’ll text you” is how a good thing fades.
  • Booking a fourth you do not mean. If it is flat, end it kindly now. Four dates of politeness is unkind to both of you.

Where it goes from here

If the one line landed and the fourth plan is made, the next few dates are the ordinary ones: a weeknight, her friends or yours, a home date with a plan.

The exclusivity conversation comes when it is a real question for both of you, which you will know because one of you will mention it without planning to.

If the third date told you it is not going anywhere, how to get a second date is for the next person, and the ending here is a warm, plain message rather than a slow fade.

Questions

What does the third date mean?

It means you both wanted to keep going after two dates, and the question has changed from “do I like her” to “is this going somewhere”.

It is the date to say your intent in one line and to see what time together is like when neither of you is performing.

Should I talk about exclusivity on the third date?

Usually not. Three dates is the point to say you want to keep seeing her, not to ask her to stop seeing anyone else. The exclusivity conversation belongs a few dates later, when one of you raises it naturally.

What is the “third date rule”?

A line from a television show about waiting until the third date to sleep together. It is not a plan. What happens on the third date is decided by what you both want, and nothing is owed because of a number.

What is a good third date idea?

Something longer and less scheduled than the first two: a daytime date that runs into the evening, a long walk and a late lunch, a market and a film and a drink.

The point is time together without a format, so the conversation can go past the good stories.
