When to Stop Seeing Other People: The Signs, and Who Says It First

Keeping your options open makes sense until it starts costing the one that matters. The readiness check, why stopping comes before asking, and the sentence that tells her.

The short answer

Stop dating other people when the other dates have started to feel like admin and one person is who you think about on them, usually after a month or two of seeing her regularly.

You can stop on your own, before asking anything of her.

Then tell her, in person and without a demand: “I’ve stopped seeing anyone else. I’m not asking you to do the same tonight. I just wanted you to know where I am.” Whoever is ready first says it first.

Her answer, now or later, is hers.

The readiness check

    Are you ready to stop?
  • The other dates feel like an obligation, or you have stopped booking them
  • You have turned down someone new because you would rather see her
  • You have seen her on ordinary evenings, including a flat one
  • She makes plans with you about as often as you make them with her
  • You would be fine, if disappointed, to hear “not yet” from her

Most of it ticked means you are ready. Then find your branch:

  • Most of the check is yes, and she is making plans too: stop seeing the others this week, tell them briefly, and tell her when the moment is right. You are not waiting for permission; you are choosing.
  • You want to stop, but you have not had an ordinary week with her yet: stop if you like, since ending dates you are not enjoying costs nothing. Hold the telling until after a few ordinary dates; the sentence carries more then.
  • You are still enjoying the other dates: not yet. Keep it honest, as dating more than one person sets out, and check again in a few weeks.
  • She has told you she has stopped: your answer is due soon. If you are not there, say so kindly: “I’m not quite there, and I didn’t want you to think I was.”
  • You are ready and she is clearly slower:

stop anyway if you want to, tell her without asking for a match, and decide for yourself how long you will wait. When she’s not ready to be exclusive has that decision.

  • You want to stop mainly so that she will: then it is a trade, not a decision. Wait until you would stop even if she did not.

Who says it first, and how

Whoever is ready first. It is not a contest, and saying it first costs nothing. Many men wait for her to go first because it feels safer.

The cost is that she may be waiting too, and both of you keep dating around out of politeness to a decision neither of you wants.

Say it in person, at a calm point: the walk after dinner, a quiet moment at home. Not by text, not in the middle of a disagreement, and not as a condition for anything that evening. One or two sentences, then stop talking.

If she says “me too”, you have both stopped, and the label can follow whenever it comes up. If she says she is not there yet, the right answer is “That’s fair. No rush,” and you mean it.

You have told her something true about you, not given her a deadline.

The trade and the statement

WeakThe trade

Date eight. He stopped seeing anyone else three weeks ago and has been waiting for her to say the same. Her profile is still up; he has looked.

YouSo, are you still on Hinge? Because I deleted mine.

A question about her apps, wrapped in a fact about his. It tells her he has been checking, and asks her to match him on the spot.

HerOh. I haven’t really been on it. I didn’t know we were… are we doing this now?

What he wanted to say (I have chosen you) came out as a test she could fail.

BetterThe statement

Date eight, the walk to the station after dinner. It has been an easy evening.

YouCan I tell you something? I’ve stopped seeing anyone else. I’m not asking you to do the same, I just wanted you to know.

A fact about him, said plainly, with the pressure taken out in the same breath.

HerThat’s really nice to hear. I think I’m nearly there too. Is it okay if I don’t say more tonight?
YouOf course. I’m not going anywhere. Thursday still good?

She knows where he stands and has room to reach her own answer, which is the only kind worth having.

How it goes wrong

  • Checking her apps to decide.

An open profile does not mean she is dating, and looking turns your decision into an investigation of hers. Still on the dating apps has the calm read.

  • The trade. “I’ll stop if you stop.” A decision made on a condition is a negotiation, and nobody feels chosen by one.
  • The ultimatum. “Stop seeing other people or I’m out.” If you reach that point, make the wait-or-walk decision kindly, for yourself, instead of issuing a threat.
  • Saying it by text. Too easy to misread, and too easy to answer with an emoji.
  • Stopping in name only. Telling her you have stopped while one conversation stays warm “just in case”. That is the old situation with a lie added.

Stopping is investment; telling her is an invitation

The framework: Invest, Invite, Release

Invest, Invite, Release runs through this decision in order. Stopping the other dates is investment, concentrated where it is returned. Telling her is an invitation: here is where I am, come if and when you want to.

Release stays on the table: for the others, with a short warm message, and for this one, if months pass and she stays where she is. The mistake is fusing the three into a single demand.

After you have said it

Questions

How long should you date someone before you stop seeing other people?

There is no set number, but for many people it happens after a month or two of regular dates, once there have been ordinary evenings as well as good ones.

A better guide than time is the readiness check: the other dates feel like admin and she is matching your plans.

Should I stop seeing other people before she does?

You can, and it is often the cleanest way. Stopping is a decision about your own time; telling her is information, not a request. If you only want to stop once she has, you are making a trade rather than a choice.

Who should bring up exclusivity first, the man or the woman?

Whoever is ready first. There is no rule either way, and saying it first does not cost you anything. Say where you are without asking her to match it on the spot, and let her answer when she has one.

Do I need to tell the other women I’ve been dating?

After more than a date or two, yes, briefly and warmly; a message is fine: “I’ve enjoyed our dates, but I’ve started seeing someone and want to give it a proper go. Thanks, and good luck.” Silence is easier for you and worse for them.
