How to Know If She’s Right for You, Early, Before It’s Obvious

“The one” is a verdict that arrives late, if at all. Whether she is right enough to keep investing in can be answered by month two, with three questions that do not depend on excitement.

The short answer

You will not know she is “the one” at month two, and you do not need to. What you can know is whether she is right enough to keep investing in, and three questions answer that without waiting for a feeling.

Do I like who she is when neither of us is trying? When something went wrong between us, did we get closer or more careful? Is it moving from both sides? Three yeses: keep going, and say so.

A clear no to any of them matters more than how exciting the start has been.

What “right for you” can mean this early

Most of what tells a man a woman is right for him in the first weeks is excitement. She is beautiful, the texts are electric, he thinks about her at work. Excitement is real, but it measures something narrow.

It tells you that you want her, not that a life with her would be good.

Some excitement is also uncertainty in disguise. A start where you never quite know where you stand produces more adrenaline than a steady one, and adrenaline is easy to mistake for depth.

If the most intense thing about her is how unsure you feel, read hot and cold first.

What you noticeWhat it tells youWhat it cannot tell you
You think about her constantlyYou are attracted, and hopefulWhether she would be good to share a life with
The dates are brilliantThere is chemistry between youHow a dull or difficult week would go
She ticks everything on your listYour list is satisfiedWhether the list was about the right things
You have never felt like thisThis is unusually intense for youWhether the intensity will settle into something steady

By month two you have something better than a feeling: two months of behaviour, yours and hers. That is enough to answer three questions.

The early signs she may be right for you

  • You are becoming more yourself around her, not less.

The dull stories, the odd hobby, the bad mood have started to show, and nothing went wrong. If you are still editing yourself heavily at month two, notice why.

  • She is the same person on the sixth date as on the first. Warmer and more relaxed, but recognisably the same, with no second personality appearing when things get ordinary.
  • She keeps small promises. She calls when she said she would, turns up, remembers. Reliability in small things is the best early preview of reliability in big ones.
  • You feel calmer after seeing her. Not flat; settled. Plenty of men read settled as boring at first, and green flags in early dating explains why that is usually the wrong way round.

The three questions after month two

Answer these on paper, about the last two months
  1. Do I like who she is when neither of us is trying?

Not on the best date: on the tired evening, with the rude waiter, when her friend let her down, when you were wrong about something. Write down two moments that answer it. If you respect how she treats people, you included, that is a yes.

  2. When something went wrong, did we get closer or more careful?

By month two something usually has: a cancelled plan, a misread text, a sharp comment. Recall the last one. Did it get talked about, and did you understand each other better afterwards?

Or was it smoothed over, so that you both tread a little carefully around it now? Repair is the skill a relationship runs on, and the first fight is where you see it properly.

  3. Is it moving, from both sides?

Who made the last three plans? Does she talk about next month as something you will both be in? Has she made room for you in her life, as you have for her? Movement that comes only from you is a hope, not yet a relationship.

Answer each with yes, no or “not yet”. “Not yet” is allowed at month two. It is not allowed at month four.

What the answers mean, and what to do

  • Three yeses:

she is right enough to keep investing in, which is all anyone can know this early. Say so at a good moment: “I really like what this is turning into.” Showing her you’re serious is the next step.

  • Two yeses and a “not yet”:

give it a month. If you have never seen repair, nothing has gone wrong yet, and that will change. If movement is unclear, suggest a plan a few weeks out and see how she meets it.

  • A no to the first question:

take it seriously, whatever the chemistry says. If you do not respect how she treats people, that rarely changes with time. Red flags in early dating separates a pattern from one bad night.

  • A no to the second: raise the thing that was smoothed over, once, gently. “I keep thinking about Sunday. Can we talk about it properly?” How that goes is the real answer.
  • A no to the third:

it may be pace rather than interest, because some people settle more slowly. Ask her plainly where she is. If it still does not move, Invest, Invite, Release covers when to stop investing.

  • Three yeses, and you feel very little: that may be fit without chemistry, and chemistry versus compatibility is where to decide whether that can change.

Right is a pattern you can see, not a feeling you wait for

The framework: The Reciprocity Test

The Reciprocity Test treats interest as a pattern of contributions, never one cue.

Whether she is right for you is the same kind of judgement on a longer timescale: respect you can see in how she treats people, repair you can see after friction, and movement coming from both directions. None of it needs certainty.

It needs two months of attention to what she does rather than how you feel, and the same honesty about what you give back.

Where to go from here

  • All three are yes: when exclusivity starts to feel like a real question for both of you, when to become exclusive has the timing.
  • You are scared because it is going well: anxious because you really like her is for the man who keeps waiting for it to go wrong.
  • One answer is a firm no: end it plainly and kindly, and soon. Two more months will not turn that no into a yes.

Questions

How do you know she’s the one?

Usually not early, and rarely in a single moment. More often the three questions keep coming back yes for a long time, and one day you notice you have stopped asking. At month two the honest question is smaller: is she right enough to keep going.

Is she right for me if I’m not sure?

Not being sure at month two is normal and is not a no. Look at what you are unsure about. If it is how you feel, give it time. If it is how she treats people or handles friction, the uncertainty is information and deserves a closer look.

What if she seems perfect but something feels off?

Try to name the something as behaviour: a moment, a habit, a thing she said. If you can name it, you can watch it over the next few weeks.

If you cannot, it may be your own nerves about a good thing, which is worth separating out before you act.
