How to Become More Attractive as a Man: The Order That Pays Fastest

Every list of ways to be more attractive is true and useless, because it has no order. This one has an order, by return on effort, and the first half of it is done by Sunday.

Updated 7 min read
The short answer

To become more attractive as a man, do the things in the first column of what you control, in order of return: this weekend, fit, grooming and posture; this month, being in rooms and starting conversations; this year, the conversation itself, fitness and a life with things in it. The first list changes how you are read immediately. The second changes whether you are read at all. The third compounds. Nothing on any of the three lists needs a different face, a different height or much money, and none of it works if you do the third list before the first.

Why order beats effort

Men who decide to become more attractive usually start with the most ambitious item: the gym, a personality overhaul, a course on charisma. Six months later they are fitter and no more noticed, because they skipped the cheap things that decide the first impression, and the first impression decides whether anything later gets seen.

The order on this page follows the Attraction Map: presentation first, because it is read before anything else; presence second, because nothing is read if you are not in the room; interaction and the rest third, because they only matter once the first two have happened. It also follows the Attraction Control Split: everything on the weekend list is entirely yours, everything on the year list is influenced over time, and nothing here is in the column that was never yours.

The three lists

WhenWhatWhy it is on this list
This weekendHaircut chosen for your face; facial hair shaped or gone; skin that looks cared for; nailsRead in the first second; cheapest change on the map
This weekendClothes that fit, starting with the three things you wear mostFit is read as “dressed on purpose” whatever the clothes cost
This weekendPosture: ears over shoulders, chin level, chest openChanges how tall, how confident and how present you read, immediately
This weekendExpression: look up, unclench the face, meet eyesThe difference between “approachable” and “leave me alone”
This monthOne recurring place with people in it, every weekPresence: you cannot be noticed in rooms you are not in
This monthOne conversation started per outing, with anyoneInitiating is the rung most men are stuck on; reps fix it
This monthInterest made clear once, to one woman, by the second conversationIntent is the step that turns “nice guy” into a man she has to decide about
This yearConversation balance: react, share, play, not just askWhat it is like to talk to you, built over hundreds of ordinary conversations
This yearFitness, as a habit rather than a transformationRead as energy and self-respect; compounds slowly
This yearA life with things in it: a sport, a craft, people who already like youGives you stories, presence and somewhere to put your attention

The weekend list is where most of the return is and where most men refuse to start, because it feels shallow. It is not shallow; it is the ticket. A man who does only this list is read differently on Monday, by everyone, and the reading is “he made an effort”, which is attractive on its own. More attractive without changing your looks is this list in detail, and the presentation guides on this site cover each item.

The month list is where attraction becomes possible rather than theoretical. Nothing on the weekend list helps a man who is at home. The Visibility Ladder is the model; how to get noticed is the practical version.

The year list is where attractiveness becomes a character rather than a presentation. It takes longest, matters most once you are in the room, and is the part men try to do first because it sounds like the real work. It is the real work. It is also useless before the other two lists are done.

Two Mondays

WeakStarting with the year list

He has decided to become more attractive. He joined a gym on Saturday and bought a book about charisma. Monday, in the office kitchen, the colleague he likes is making tea.

HerMorning.
You(nods, looks at his phone, same jacket as every day, hair that has not been cut since summer)

The gym and the book have changed nothing she can see. The thing she can see is the same as last Monday.

Her(leaves with her tea)

Six months of this and he will be fitter and still invisible to her, because the first impression was never addressed.

BetterStarting with the weekend list

Same Monday, different weekend: a haircut, shaped stubble, a shirt that fits, and he has been practicing standing up straight in the lift.

HerMorning. Oh, you cut your hair.
YouFinally. My barber has been threatening me since July.
HerIt suits you. Short like that.
YouThanks. That’s the first nice thing anyone’s said to me before coffee in about a year. How was your weekend?

She noticed, said so, and he reacted rather than deflecting. Nothing on the year list was needed for this conversation to exist.

One weekend changed what she saw. Now the month list and the year list have a conversation to be used in.

Do the lists in order

    The weekend list
  • Book a haircut and tell the barber your face shape and that you want something low-maintenance; the guide on a haircut for your face shape is the script
  • Shape the facial hair or shave it; patchy and undecided reads as neglect
  • Three days of a basic skin routine: wash, moisturize, nothing else
  • Try on the three things you wear most; anything that pulls, bags or ends in the wrong place gets replaced or tailored
  • Stand side-on to a mirror and fix posture: ears over shoulders, chin level, chest open; do it every time you pass a reflection this week
  • Notice your resting face in a shop window and unclench it
  1. Do the weekend list this weekend, all of it, before anything else. It is the only list with an immediate return.
  2. Start the month list on Monday: choose the recurring place, go, and start one conversation. Repeat weekly. Do not evaluate results for four weeks; evaluate reps.
  3. Add one year-list item, not three. For most men it should be the conversation balance, because it is used every day and the Conversation Balance makes it specific.
  4. In three months, re-run the diagnostic and see which step is now the first one you fail. It will have moved.

The ways this goes wrong

  • Starting with the gym. It is a year-list item that feels like a weekend-list item because it is physical. Keep it, but do the haircut first.
  • Spending money as a substitute for order. A new wardrobe does not help a man who is not in any rooms. The weekend list costs a haircut and a tailor.
  • Doing the weekend list once. It is a standard, not an event. The haircut grows out; the posture slips. Re-run the checklist monthly.
  • Confusing “attractive” with “impressive”. Status, money and achievements are year-list items at best and are read far less than men believe. Cared-for, present and interested are read every time.
  • Working on the third column. Face, height, the woman who already said no. Nothing on these lists touches them, on purpose; the looks page and the height page say what is known and what to do with it.

What “more attractive” actually means

The framework: The Attraction Control Split

It means more easily read as a man who is cared for, present and interested, by more people, more often. That is all the lists do. They do not change who you are; they change whether anyone finds out, which for most men who feel overlooked is the whole problem. The man at the end of the year list is not a different man. He is the same one, visible, with somewhere to be and something to say, and that is what women are responding to when they say someone “became attractive”.

Questions

How long before I notice a difference?

The weekend list is noticed on Monday, usually by people who will not say why. The month list produces its first real conversation inside a few weeks. The year list is the one you notice in yourself first, around month three, when conversations stop feeling like work.

I can’t afford new clothes. Does the weekend list still work?

Yes, because the list is about fit, not purchases. A tailor charges a fraction of a new shirt to take in the three you already wear, and a haircut and posture cost nothing beyond the cut. More attractive without changing your looks is written for exactly this budget.

What about personality? Isn’t that what really matters?

It matters most once you are in a conversation, which is why it is on the year list and not before. A great personality that no one encounters is a rumor. Do the first two lists so the third has somewhere to happen.

Which single item gives the biggest return?

Fit, for most men, because it is read instantly and almost nobody has done it. Posture is a close second and is free. If you only do two things from this page, do those two this weekend.
